Thoughts on minimalism
Minimalism was introduced to me several years ago by two guys who refer to themselves as, “The Minimalists.” It all began when I was getting ready to meet up with friends for a last minute get together. I felt a sudden urge of frustration when I realized I could not assemble a decent outfit at the last minute, despite the fact that my closet was clustered and jam packed. Most items I had were either overused, lost its quality after two washes, or purchased at the heat of the moment because I thought “one day, I’ll feel comfortable to wear this,” and then never actually gained the confidence to wear it. I got more heated at the fact that I had spent so much money just to have nothing to wear.
I’m sure most people who have do not know much about minimalism mind’s lead straight to someone who have two, maybe three, basic tees, a laptop, little to no furniture, and one of each dish per household member. The wonderful thing about minimalism is that it is subjective. Minimalism can be used to cater what you value and desire in life rather than thinking, “how many little items can I keep in my house.” Minimalism is not just a way of life but has been used in various subjects for many years, such as Ernest Hemingway’s direct, yet, cogent writing style, or Frank Stella’s modern artwork. Another common misconception is that minimalism has to be expensive. Yes, most minimal modern aesthetics you see on Instagram consist of a $6000 couch or a $2000 table stand. However, you can find many modern, aesthetic, and quality items for much cheaper. The main goal is to only purchase items that you find value and won’t get tired of looking at. To me, minimalism means only purchasing/keeping items that I find add value to my home and life.
Although I may not have a 30 item wardrobe, I consider myself a minimalist because my closest consists of quality pieces I won’t get tired of, can reuse many ways, and I actually feel comfortable wearing. Creating a capsule wardrobe won’t happen over night, but if planned right, can help you be more confident in the clothes you wear and can actually save you money in the long run. The same goes with my home. I am proud to say that even after coming home from vacation, I feel like I live in paradise because I’ve build a home catered to my lifestyle and what brings me value.
